Evaluation & Reflection:

22/03/22:

In the first couple weeks of this project I have began to develop an idea. I started by deciding I wanted to do a music video and have researched multiple subjects to come up with an idea. I have also filmed a little bit of footage that is just scenery shots but I did decide to film it as I was on holiday in Devon and decided it would be a good idea to take advantage, even if I don't use it, it can be inspiration for my filming. At this point in the project I do have a concept and a chosen song for the music video. I need to prepare for the pitch for my project. I also have yet to plan my project like Location recce's shooting scripts, and production schedules etc. I have tried to research as much as I can to further solidify my idea. Including: The song, things that will inform my visuals, other music videos and research into anxiety (the main theme of my narrative). I still want to do a little bit of research into the era the song was released (2015) and some fashion research in preparation for costume. Looking at the rough schedule I created I would say that I am on track. I am almost finished with research and just have to begin preparing my pitch presentation. I would say my main priority is my pitch I have not started yet and need to have it ready for next week.

01/04/22:

This past week or so has been a busy and stressful one. It is almost time to start shooting and I am almost rushing to get everything done before the end of term. I started the week off by preparing my Pitch. The Pitch went quite well and I was able to give an audience of about 5 people a good idea of what I am going for in my project. I also received some positive criticism about my idea. Things like considering locations and conducting an, almost, interview with someone who has had experience with anxiety. Unfortunately I was unable to do said interview because I didn't know anyone that would be willing to talk and I was also running out of time as it was, however it is something to consider for the future. After completing my pitch I was then able to get on with my research. I also started planning my production. I have now narrowed my idea down to the shortest it can be and is now going to be around the 5 minutes and 40 seconds mark. This is slightly over the recommended 5 minute time limit however I am confident I will be able to do this well. I have given myself two weeks to film and about 3-4 weeks to edit it together which, I feel is ample time to get it done in time for deadline. I have got a couple actors sorted who are willing to help out and do have an idea on props but there won't be many. Next week I need to sort out locations and do a proper shooting script and finally a Production Schedule. After this I should be ready to do some test shoots in readiness for the shooting.

07/04/22:

On the last day of term I have finished planning for the production stage. I began the week by going on a location recce to both of my chosen locations. It went quite well and I was able to get a photo of most of the areas I am thinking of using as well as plenty of back up locations in case it can't be done. The next stage was to write a shooting script. This took up most of my time this week but I had a lot of the video in my head, I just needed to put it on to paper (or Microsoft Word in this case). I was able to stretch my idea out over the full 5 and a half minute timeframe. I received some written feedback for my pitch this week as well and did my best to respond to the 'Even Better If...' comments from the pitch. With some feedback for my Context & Research I was also able to add/remove some stuff to/from this page to make it really clarify what is going to happen in my video like looking at the way that the NGHFB's music videos are made and looking at multiple camera techniques and movements. To finish of the week I made a production schedule based on what I know is happening over half term. I have given myself plenty of time to shoot and also opportunities to test shoot as well as do any pickups should I require them. My next priority is do some test shoots using some of the camera techniques i have seen during my research to find out how effective they will be in my music video if I am going through with some of them, and then begin filming.

25/04/22:

After the Easter Break I have managed to get most of the footage I need for my music video. However, one of the days I had scheduled to film my main actor had to do a 'rain check' as he couldn't make it. This means that I will have to rebook the camera out for next weekend. Luckily I have about 60% of my shortage ready to go so I can be editing what I have during the week while I wait to get the remaining footage.

The stuff that I did get I am quite pleased with. I am relying on colour grading and editing to help make the video look better. I am conscious about the amount of shots I have and am slightly concerned I do not have enough. On my second shoot day I am going to try and boost the number of shots up quite a lot. I have used multiple in camera techniques and angles to make my shots look interesting and do plan to continue using more techniques. A lot of the interesting aspects I feel will be created in the editing process which Is what I will be starting today. This next week I will begin to get a rough cut with the footage I have together and then film the rest at the weekend.

01/05/22:

At the end of another month, I feel that I have got all the footage I will need for my Music video. I tried to use as many techniques, that would fit the video, as I could while filming and different angles as well so I had plenty of things to use. It has been a roller coaster of a production but I am now fully ready to continue on with editing and get it finished for the deadline. During the early days of the week I did begin editing the music video and I will say that the footage I had at the time I am very happy with. It still needs colour grading and effects and all the other little things before I can say it is finished but with what I have planned, I have high hopes for this project. At this time I have 4 weeks left to be complete.

03/05/22:

Now I have finished shooting, I decided that now would be a good time to review my footage. The overall technical quality of my shots are of a good standard for what stage I am at with filmmaking. I have tried to utilise as many different camera techniques and angles as possible that would look good for the video. The camera work could be a little better as some are a bit shaky and were all handheld. There are also a couple shots featuring the guitar where you can see the reflection of the camera man. I have tried to eradicate this problem by cutting the clips down but it does reduce the amount of leg room I have in terms of editing. I did not use any lights for my project (other than the sun) so I would say that the lighting isn't quite at "pro level" however I feel that it is satisfactory just using natural light. I am also relying on colour grading in post to really enhance the composition in the shots. I am really happy with the locations I chose to film at. They have the exact feel I was thinking when first coming up with my idea and really do the footage justice. The openness and reclusive nature really reflects how the character is alone and does not want to be near anyone. The only thing that could have been better was the weather. On the second shoot day it was really cloudy with does mess up with continuity but was the only option I had. Again, colour grading these shots may improve the look but it would have been nice to have some blue sky. My actors were able to wear clothes that do reflect both my colour scheme and also that of the band I chose (Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds) which further improves the detail of the video.

I have began to edit a rough cut together and the footage that I have played around with is looking good and does fit the song quite well. However I don't really have a great idea of how the whole video is coming just yet but I am liking the stuff I have at the moment.

10/05/22:

With 3 weeks left until deadline I am now really knuckling down and trying to get my edit to the standard I want it to be when I hand it in on the 27th. One of the things I will also be doing is trying to get the written work to the best of my ability also. I have received some feedback on my website from a couple people and it is largely positive, however there are a couple things that I need to fix. The first thing I need to do is place a few of my Harvard references on to my Proposal form. The reason why I didn't do this at the beginning of the project was I had no idea what websites and other research methods I was going to use as I came into the project almost blind with what I wanted to do. My Proposal form, otherwise, is at a good standard and clearly defines what I wanted to complete in the project.

One major question I should be asking myself is - Will I be able to complete the project by the deadline?

At this point with my edit, it is at a presentable standard, however there is still plenty more stuff I want to do to it like colour grading and adding effects. It is definitely possible for me to meet the deadline if I limit myself with the effects.

Grading Myself (At a WIP Stage):

Using the grading criteria for the project I am going to grade myself if an assessor was to look at my website today.

  • Context: For Context I would say that it is at a Merit. I have shown that I have a good understanding of what I have wanted to create and knowledge whilst also sticking to the idea throughout the project. I have also used said understanding and knowledge to show my ambitions and make sound judgements for what I can do.

  • Research: I have been very thorough with my research for this project and I feel it has benefited me. I have tried to use as many different types of research like YouTube tutorials, surveys, costume, test shoots and existing music videos to inform my project in order to create a very good piece of content. I have also sustained the research throughout production and now post production. This I feel puts my research at a merit also. To bump it up to a distinction, I think I could be more insightful with my research and not just use what is shown by the sources.

  • Practical: At the moment I am halfway through practical work however, with what I have at the moment, I am really happy. The in camera techniques that I used and framing/composition of some of the shots are some of my best ever. Considering the limited budget and gear also makes it even better. The colour correction and arrangement of the shots in my premiere timeline also do a good job of both bouncing off the song and also telling a cohesive but visual story. The moral I have used for the story also is clear whilst also not being too 'in your face'. To extend the enquiry I have used a slight twist in the story. Rather than there being just 2 characters that miraculously meet one time I have added this 3rd character that is almost a mastermind or man in control of what is happening in the story. I feel like this is not a common thing to happen (especially in music videos). I have also used a more interesting story than my previous music video. The technical quality is a big improvement as well. I have learned how I can use more of a variety of camera angles and techniques as well as some effects I will be using. I think my practical is somewhere between a pass and merit. Although I have used multiple techniques I don't feel that it is a big enough difference from other music videos.

  • Evaluation: Throughout the entire project I have been blogging almost each week to show how production is going as it happens. This, I have found, is a lot better than saving it all to the end as I am not forgetting about anything and I can go In to detail about relatively small things that happen or that I have to do. I have tried to explain my thinking and what I am trying to accomplish throughout and have mentioned things that I have decided do not work and what I could do better with certain things. At the moment I would say this is also at the sort of Merit level.

At the moment I feel I am working at a Merit (ish) level overall. However I find grading myself really difficult and struggle to be neither too harsh or too kind to myself. It may be slightly biased and am not expecting this grade by any means but It's the best I could do myself.

19/05/22:

In the past week, I have been hard at work trying to get my edit as good as I can in time for deadline. I have been showing a few people my edit and receiving feedback on how I can improve it. This feedback has greatly helped me to see how much better I could make the video even just re-jigging the shots on the timeline made it tonnes better. It has also allowed the story and aim to be a lot clearer for the casual audiences. I have also watched a few videos that show how to edit effectively and shows different techniques like how to achieve a cinematic look or how to create an effect. I have started to use Adobe After Effects as well which is something I have wanted to try out in this project. It does seem overwhelming at the moment however with time and practice it could become second nature (like premiere pro did). Unfortunately I was not able to have a completed video by the 19th as was announced in my trailer however I have sent out several of may favourites shots from my current edit along with the new release date of the 26th (the following Thursday). This is a lot more achievable and I will almost certainly be finished with it by then. I am really happy with how my latest version is looking. The shots are looking great, the pacing is on point and it fits really well with the song. I now need to create a couple effects in AE and finalize the music video for next week.

24/05/22:

With just a couple more days left until deadline, I have arrived at the stage where stuff is beginning to feel complete. During the last week I began by looking into After effects. Unfortunately, I was not able to use AE in the end because of time constraints and bringing my footage over to AE was a big pain. I decided that the stress wasn't worth it with so little time left. I did however manage to finish my edit. It is now at the point where I didn't want to add any more to it and I am really happy with it. I feel that The story of the 3 characters is really nice and fits will with the songs lyrics. 2 people find each other and it is made possible by a character who calls himself 'The Mighty I'. The technical quality is also really good. I love the colours used throughout the video and how coordinated it all is. Some of the shots look stunning whilst the rest are still great. I don't think there is much (if any) filler footage in the video now. The shots also flow a lot smoother now which also improves the pacing which suits the beat to the song. Overall it fits together and also I feel has improved the song that tiny bit more, which is what Music videos are all about. There are still a couple more things that I want to do before deadline, I want to create a proper thumbnail for the video ready for uploading it to YouTube which I may do in photoshop. I am also due to be getting some feedback in a couple days when my project along with everyone else's is being screened. After this I will be conducting a final evaluation of my overall project.

Final Evaluation

Introduction: Over the last 2 months I have been slowly developing a project that I wished to create for the end of my first year on the course. Now on the final day of the project, I will look back on what I have achieved, what I could have done better and, most importantly, what have I learned.

Pre Production: Every project starts with an idea. I had been tasked with developing a creative media project for my 1st year final project. The only rule was that it needed to have some relevance with the word CHANGE. I knew right from the beginning that I wanted to create a music video. I had only just finished the music video project from before this and really wanted a second chance to really make a proper music video I was happy with.

I think that one of the best decisions I made in the project was to go into it blind. I knew the key to succeeding was to DEVELOP the project and not necessarily have a great film. Starting from scratch is a great way to develop a project. After looking at some official music videos and sending out a survey I had reached an idea. I was going to tell the story of a character who suffers from social anxiety and wants to overcome their troubles. It then later developed into the idea that someone would meet them and they would come out of their shell, so to speak. I came across a song by Noel Gallagher's high flying birds (of which I am a fan) called Ballad Of The Mighty I. I loved the song anyway which is a big step in the right direction. I also realised the song has a specific tone that I thought really fit what I was going for: upbeat, indie-rock sounding, but also the lyrics could be weaved into the concept I had created. Standouts included: 'You just pass me by' and 'Ill find you' which are both repeated throughout the song. It was a no-brainer. I continued to develop my research by looking at some more music videos and the styles they have, I researched a little about anxiety, created a mood board, looked at the clothes the band where usually and created a colour scheme. All the research I compiled in the early stages led to me really seeing this vision of what I wanted the music video to look like. I really tried to use multiple different sources for my research as well to try to get the best understand I could to create the music video. After some planning and a shooting script I was ready to go out and film.

Production: Just because I started to film doesn't mean that research is over. I continued it by going out and testing some camera techniques to see if it could work in the final video and how you do it. I also looked at different camera angles and other techniques for filming. When we were ready for shooting we went to the first location and got all the footage that I knew I needed. Because I'd laid the shooting script out in such a way that the different sections of the song were divided into sections in the video, it was easy to know what footage to get and how I should direct my actors. When It came to the second day is where things started to go wrong. One of the actors told me that he could not make the shoot on the day we were meant to be going out to film. This through a massive spanner in the works and meant I not only had to rebook equipment but also it meant I had to go a week only being able to edit half the footage I needed. They were able to attend the following week however and I was able to get production wrapped after.

Post Production: Now to edit the footage. Possibly my favourite stage of the film making pipeline is editing. I enjoy being able to put all the footage together into one timeline and seeing your idea come to life. While I do enjoy it, there were a few hiccups during post production that did annoy me. The main trouble was that as I was adding more stuff to the Premiere Pro timeline, the software began to be extremely slow to run and almost unbearable at one point. It took ages to save, export or even open my assembly tab. With the amount of footage I had and the effects I had applied I can see why it struggled so much but it did delay stuff a little. Speaking of effects I had stated all the way back at the time of my pitch that I wanted to use this project to gain some basic knowledge of how After Effects works. It is a great softly for applying motion graphics and visual effects to all sorts of media. Unfortunately when the time came for me to load up the software, my file was to big to be able to add any effects or even play the footage back within AE. With the little time I had left in the project, I decided to pull the plug on that idea and that it wasn't a necessary aspect to creating the music video. I did go through multiple renditions of the music video, some of which are located on this website. I even altered what was on the shooting script. I decided that I needed to at least appear in my music video otherwise no one would know who made it. I took inspiration from some of Noel Gallagher's music videos and gave myself a full on character. My character was going to be the reason (catalyst) that brought the other 2 characters together. The guitar that I had chosen to be the thing that draws them to each other was actually owned by this third character. I really liked the idea and adds a real hook to the plot of the video to keep people interested.

The Final Cut: What do I think of it? When I watched through, what would eventually be, the final cut of my video I had a big grin on my face and was head banging throughout all 5 and a half minutes of it and knew that I had achieved what I originally set out to do. Albeit some of the shots are a bit clunky in places but that is mainly due to the lack of budget, resources and time I had to make it. After the screening in front of all the other people who had their own projects to do I am happy with the response I have received. I really like the colour grading in the video, it matches all the way through where it is meant to and makes it seem cinematic and almost Americana, which is what I was going for. I have been told that the actors were perfectly cast as they fit the style of NGHFB. The clothes worn by said actors are also fitted with the colour scheme I had chosen and the locations are exactly what I was hoping they would look like. The weather also helped make it look the way it did (for a change). Some criticism I have received for the music video is that the part of the 3rd character isn't very clear. I can see this being an issue with a lot of people however it is only minor. Other than that I am thrilled with the way it turned out.

Conclusion: What next? As stated before I am really happy with the way it turned out. It is what I envisioned it would be (minus some effects) about 2 months ago when I began the project. Over the course of it I have learned how to edit efficiently, how to composite different shots together and also some different techniques and effects I can use both in camera and in post. I have also learned to be very careful relying on people and make sure they can attend shooting. Something that has been stated in my work is that I chose to have this music video be like a subtle sequel (for the want of a better term) to the Something in The Way video I helped to create in the project prior to this. The guitar is the same one and is why two characters are drawn to it and it is so significant. Due to the success of this music video I may create a 3rd one to turn it into a trilogy which will expand on some of the story and further my skills in film making during the summer away from college. I am going to submit the music video to a local film festival because I am so happy with it and eagerly await what the more people that watch it think in the future.

Thank You!

I confirm that the work on this website is entirely my own and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself, except where clearly stated otherwise, and that sources have been appropriately referenced.
