Pre-Production

3D Model Mock Up:

3D Model Mock Up.PNG

This is a screenshot, from Photoshop, of an edited 3D Model I had made. This model was then put on to Photoshop and I added textures and features to it and a background. This is so I can get an idea of what it could like if I were to apply it to my project.

This is a picture of the model I made for this task. I cut out a bunch of random shapes of cardboard and then tried to create something original with these shapes.

Extended Mind Maps & Mood Boards:

Flats Mind Map.PNG

This is an extended Mind Map that goes into detail in Flat Buildings. These will play a major part in the project so it was necessary. This has definitely highlighted some things I need to focus on while doing this project.

Planning Scene:

In this section I will be reviewing what the best course of action will be in terms of the story.

I am struggling to pick one idea so I thought I would try and decide. One of my Ideas is have the scene in a completely abandoned city (Like Chernobyl) and have it either outside or inside. Another idea I have had is to have it be a Council estate that is run down. The third and final idea I had was have it in a nice modern house instead that is secluded from everyone else. The problem with the Chernobyl idea is that it would be a lot more detailed and the level would need to be quite big. The council estate is better. The scene could be in one of the houses and you could have clues outside as well and it would not need to be too big. The secluded modern house is also a good one however it would just throw the run down and abandoned theme I was originally going for out the window. I think that the council estate idea would be a better one of the three, mainly because of the way it could fit in to the idea and also is not something you commonly see in games and other media for this genre.

Now I am sure which idea to do I need to create a story behind it so then I can do the floorplans and go into production.

Lore:

This will be an integral part of the pre production stage. To know what I am designing I need a general Story to base it off.

Terry Gallagher is a former Crime group member, On his last job, the group he was with hijacked a truck full of arms and ammunition. Because of this highly sensitive load there was extra security. Terry was the driver of the truck after it had been taken. On the journey, a convoy of armed police officers arrived to try and stop the group from getting further. one of the police officers got to the drivers door and told Terry to exit the vehicle. Terry froze, The policeman raised his gun but before he could pull the trigger he was shot by the passenger also in the front of the truck. Terry just stared into the dying police officers eyes. He couldn't do anything. When the crime group arrived to the buyer, the leader of the group grew mad with terry for freezing. Terry then decided he no longer wanted to be a part of it. So he went to Live in a council flat just outside the city. Terry had PTSD after his last job.

Game's Story:

The story of the game begins with Terry Gallagher sat in his front room (at night) having flashbacks of some of the jobs he did with the crime group. Then a gunshot comes through the front window and wounds him badly. 2 Men wearing balaclavas then bust into his house and slit his throat. They leave the knife by terry's body then leave. This opening cutscene will not be shown completely as the player needs to find out what has happened themselves. The murder will not be shown completely and the men that entered will not be shown until the end. The following morning the police have cordoned off the house and an investigation ensues. This will be the scene I am making. The rest of the story is basically you play as a detective inspector finding out what has happened.

Level Floorplans:

One of the most important things I will do for the Pre-production stage is consider what the floorplan is going to look like. Before I go onto designing it I need to know what location and the sort of area that this scene will be. I will do this research before moving on to the floorplan.

floorplan%20concept%201%20floor%201_edit

The floorplan design has improved 10 fold with this one. It is perfect for what I'm going to do I have also put all the assets (from below) into it to see where I could put them. It is not too complicated or large so it just works. I will definitely be using this as my design.

This is my first concept for the floorplan. It is based on a normal sized house. My other designs will be different types of buildings and also have more of a crime scene look. This was mainly to see the layout of rooms and just to start it off. A crime scene could work out well in this and there are a lot of areas where there could be clues etc. This will probably not be the final design.

For my floorplan and level. I have decided to only do one room in a flat that is quite run down. The Plan will need to include a door, living room and kitchen at least. anything like bedrooms or bathrooms or even a second floor is not needed. Because it is a flat there will not be an exterior part. There could be a part of a hallway to replace this.

Asset List:

The asset list needs to be done in order to start Production. To make stuff, you need to know what you are making. Below I am going to conduct a list of the assets I want to create for my level.

  • Knife/Dagger

  • Small Television

  • Coffee Table

  • Spotlights

  • Briefcase

  • Camera

  • Ash Tray

  • Vase

  • ID Badge

  • Sofa + Chair(s)

  • TV Unit

  • Doors + Windows

  • Cupboards

This selection of images is going to be used as inspiration for the assets I'm planning to make. This will be useful and easier to find and look at if needed. I now also have ideas of what all of them will look like. All the images were chosen because I liked there design and would be practical in my level.

End Of Pre Production:

Now That I have prepared for the production stage. I am ready to move on to the next stage, Production. Similar to Context and Research, This section has made a lot more context for the upcoming tasks. Concept Design will be the next step Which is not a huge section but I will need it to design my assets and also marketing materials that will be made concurrently with the 3D assets.

Unreal Engine Testing:

UE4 First Level.PNG

This is a screenshot of my first landscape in Unreal. It didn't take too long but I used a range of tools, including landscape and foliage, and used textures to detail it. Some of the plants were created in 3DS Max then imported in this. Some of the Assets are included in the starter content like the chairs and bushes. I also added a statue to be the focal point which was also already on Unreal.

This is the material editor for the textures that I needed to create for it to have the effect it does.
